Year 10 Geography at the North Coast
Yr 10 GCSE Geography pupils had an opportunity to visit the Giants Causeway and Whiterocks beach on the 28th of June.
We had 3 teachers with us - Mrs Parker, Mr Hughes and Mr Dennison.
We came into school and met in the Assembly Hall to get marked in, and then headed off to the bus that was driving us up to the Giant's Causeway.
When we arrived we had a chance to go and visit the souvenir shop while the tour guide was getting ready.
On the way towards the causeway the tourguide showed us the different rock formations like the camel. He also showed us the rocks formed by lava and dead plants and the different layers in the rock created by the lava. He also gave us a bit of background information, explaining what it was like 65 million years ago.
When we reached the bottom of the Causeway we saw the basalt columns and six-sided blocks created by the cooling lava. Our tour guide then showed us the wishing seat where three pupils made a wish, but in order for the wish to come true they had to wiggle three times and close their eyes. We heard the story of Finn McCool and saw the boot he left behind. They have been able to work out Finn's height because of the size of this boot.
On our way back to the bus we had to climb 162 stairs!
When we got back to the bus we had half an hour for lunch and another chance to visit the shop. Then we went to the theatre and watched an audio visual show.
On Whiterocks Beach one of our teachers told us about the different types of rocks. We saw some stacks and went into some of the caves. Unfortunately when we came out of the caves it started to rain so we headed for the bus and went back to school.
One thing we learned from the trip was the real explanation for how the Giant's Causeway was formed and we enjoyed our walk down to see the caves on Whiterocks Beach.
