2011 A Level Exam Success
Sixth form students from Cullybackey High School received their A2/AS results with a sense of excitement and anticipation. Happily almost all students gained the grades necessary to go on to their preferred University course, their work placement or their return to Upper Sixth.
Staff and pupils were delighted with the quality of the grades received. 96% and 97% of entries achieved grades at A* to E in AS and A2 level respectively.
At AS level outstanding results were achieved in Biology and R.E. with 100% of pupils achieving C grade or above. A special mention to Hannah Gillespie who gained 3 A grades in her AS levels. Seven subjects gained 70% of results at Grade C or better.
At A2 level candidates gained excellent results with 64% of all grades being at C or better. Health and Social Care recorded over 80% of grades at C or above.
Outstanding individual results were recorded by Naomi Fenton 2A*, 1A and Cherith Fenton 1A*, 2A. Jade Allen, Barry Clarke, Charmaine Glover, Steven Henry, Paula Kernohan, Lynsey McCrystal, Alison Rodgers and Christopher Shannon all achieved 3 high grade results and must also be congratulated.
Once again these excellent results are a credit to the quality of teaching, sustained effort of pupils and the encouragement of parents. It is most pleasing to see these young people achieve such creditable results in a non selective school and it must be encouraging and motivating to young people disappointed at transfer to realise that with sustained effort they too can still achieve to the highest level.
2011 GCSE Exam Success
Cullybackey High School is pleased with the results at GCSE level. There were a number of excellent individual performances, the best of which was that of Jessica McCombe, last year’s head girl, who gained 6A* and 3A grades. Other high performers were Andrew Atcheson 2A*, 4A and 3B, Kathy Ewart, 7A, 1B, Thomas Gordon 1A*, 3A, 4B, 1C, Emma Gregg 2A*, 5A, 2B and Pamela McBurney 3A, 5B, 1C.
On a departmental basis the outstanding performance was in History where all 36 students gained A* to C grades. Home Economics (Child Development) Hospitality and Catering, ICT and Motor Vehicle Studies all had pass rates of 90% or above at A*-C.
The teaching staff, pupils and parents are to be congratulated on these excellent performances which open doors to study at A levels in Cullybackey High School, other post 16 schools, the Northern Regional College or the world of work.
Once again the team work of dedicated teachers and motivated students has brought about an excellent standard of success at GCSE level. A strong correlation exists between excellence in attendance, attitude, aptitude and positive relationships with staff and high achievements. This is proof that the school’s aim of ‘creating opportunity for success’ is being fulfilled.

Double Award Applied Business and ICT
Eco-friendly graduate Houston Reid, who receives his BSc degree this afternoon at the Coleraine campus, practices what he preaches. He and three university friends are working flat out on an idea triggered by the amount of waste left by people at festivals.
"We have developed the idea of producing an environmentally-friendly tent aimed specifically towards music festivals," Houston says. "We recognised a major problem in this industry and have worked together closely to develop a possible solution."
Their ‘ecoTent' is fully biodegradable and can be left behind at venues and, so, remedy the problem of abandoned polythene tents.
"It's hard to believe but people are leaving their tents behind at festivals," says Houston (22), from Ahoghill in Co Antrim. "We carried out research and found that 15,000 tents were left behind at Glastonbury in 2007."
In the 2010 Enterprise Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, ecoTent picked up the ‘Most Technologically Innovative Idea Award' (sponsored by Cruickshank Intellectual Property Attorneys) of €7,500 plus €20,000 worth of consultancy.
Houston said: "We are developing a prototype eco-tent that can be left behind for compost or just safely disintegrate in to the soil."
Three of the team receive degrees at Ulster this week. Houston and Stephen Caldwell will be conferred BSc Hons in Computing with Business, while Jonathon Garland graduates in Business and Terri O'Kane will complete her degree next year.
"We are in the process of establishing a limited liability partnership and the concept is being patented. What's needed now is an investor to fund research and testing. We will spend the rest of the summer on the project before we get full time jobs. But even then we will be keeping it on the boil to make sure we are eventually able to bring it to the production stage."
