Maths Week Ireland 2011

Click to go to Maths Week Ireland SiteOn Thursday the 20th October 8A1 and 8A2 travelled to see a Mathemagician at Coleraine University. We went on a coach with Mrs Houston and Mrs Harvey and had our packed lunch on the way down.

The Mathemagician was a very nice man, he used to be a Maths teacher. He had come all the way from Australia.

The Mathemagician told us how to work out probability and showed us that the probability of winning the Lotto was really small, 0.00000715112.

He then played a game with us to show us the probability that there were two people in the room with the exact same birthday.

He also did this coin trick. He had a coin and he chose somebody to come up and flip it for him. He then picked someone to pick heads or tails. No matter how many people he asked, he won more often than he lost. He then told us the trick to doing it.

Some of the maths was quite difficult but we had great fun!
