Induction Programme

There is a well established induction programme which makes the transition from Primary to Secondary School as smooth as possible. Details of this programme are listed below.

PRIMARY/SECONDARY LINKS
While your child is continuing his/her education in P7, Cullybackey High School is already establishing links with the Primary Schools through invitations to attend school events, use of the school's facilities, and professional contact between staffs.

JUNE VISIT
You and your child are invited to an Information Evening in June when you can learn about the running of the school.

A PARENTS' GUIDE
A Parents' Guide to First Year, which answers many frequently asked questions, will be distributed in June to the parents of all transferring pupils.

FIRST FORM ONLY DAY
Traditionally the first day of the new school year is dedicated to those coming to the High School for the first time. Prefects are available over the first few days to escort classes from room to room and help our newest pupils settle in.

CLASS PLACEMENTS
Pupil groupings, according to wide ability bands are initially based on information gained from testing in Mathematics and English. Testing is undertaken on entry to the school and, where possible, friendships established in the primary school are taken into consideration when assigning pupils to classes. Parental requests in this regard will given due consideration. Movement between bands is reviewed periodically, with teacher evaluation of pupil performance being guided by the school's assessment for learning processes.

RESIDENTIAL VISIT
A residential visit to the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum at Cultra in September allows your child to benefit from a wide range of educational and social activities in an interesting and stimulating environment, which promotes the consolidation of old, and the forming of new, friendships.

PARENTAL CONSULTATION
Two evenings are set aside for communication with Year 8 parents. In October there is a meeting with Senior Staff and Form Teachers to discuss how pupils have settled in to their new environment. In the Spring Term there is a more in-depth meeting with subject teachers to discuss academic progress. Informal contact is welcomed at any time.
